Why Install a Roof Rack Basket on Your Ute?

by Yvonne Carter

While your ute usually has enough space to carry the stuff you need to do your job, you may sometimes struggle to get everything stowed away. Upgrading to a bigger vehicle may not be an option; installing a roof rack basket on the ute may help.

What is a roof basket, and how will it help you?

What Is a Roof Rack Basket?

Like a regular roof rack, a basket attaches to the roof of a vehicle to add carrying capacity. However, this kind of rack gives you more of an instant container than a basic rack. These racks are shaped like baskets. They tend to have a bar or mesh design rather than being solid, and they are made up of an open tray which has four shallow sides around it.

What Are the Benefits of Roof Rack Baskets?

The main advantage of having a roof rack basket on your ute is the extra capacity it gives you to carry things. Your roof space is the perfect place to site extra storage; it won't impact negatively on the general capacity of your ute but will add to it.

So if you're working on a big job, you can load some things on to the basket as well as in the ute itself. This could mean the difference between being able to carry all the stuff you need in one trip as opposed to having to make multiple trips to get everything you want to use from A to B.

The design of the basket itself is also useful. Unlike racks and flat trays, roof baskets have sides. These may help you secure your gear more quickly; they also give a more secure hold.

So if something were to move slightly when you're driving, it would be more likely to be held in place by one of the basket's sides than to fall off the rack. If you use a flat rack, things may fall off the roof if their tie-down loops or fixings fail.

Even if you don't need the extra space that a roof basket gives you all the time, you may be happier leaving this kind of rack on your roof even when you aren't using it. Its open design allows air to move efficiently through the basket when it is empty, so you won't experience the wind-resistance problems you might have if you are driving with a solid roof box, for example.

Local roof rack suppliers can show you the types of baskets that will fit your ute. They can also tell you more about the advantages of using this kind of roof rack.

About Me

The German Car Blog

Although I am also a big fan of Australian cars, my passion for German cars is almost as strong. Ever since I was a teenager, I've been into Porsches, Volkswagens, Audis and Mercedes. Even now I'm still thrilled to get behind the wheel of a German-made car even though I have driven plenty of models over the years. If you want advice on importing a classic German car from Europe or simply want my views on the latest developments in German car technology, then I hope that you will find my blog to be as informative as it is up to date.
